This post is going to have to be a quickie! I wanted to mention that Bloomington is about 30 homes away from being certified as a community with the National Wildlife Federation! The online form takes about 15-30 minutes to fill out, and as you fill it out you can use it as a way to make a mental “to do” list to help your garden become even more hospitable to wildlife. Here’s the link: National Wildlife Federation. Only a one-time fee of $15.00, but you get a lot out of it! Ultimately, just being good to wildlife is the best reward, but if we get certified maybe Bloomington will have a celebration, too!

In the Moment

My Mom told me that Nene, my Grandmother, stated that going to church was the only time she could rest. You see, throughout Nene’s life she experienced many hardships. Nene referenced church as an experience she lived in the present. Do our lives today mirror this feeling of needing peace? How do you find ways to live “in the moment” and experience peace?
Once I completed a personality assessment where it confirmed that I am “futuristic;” I admit I spend a lot of time dreaming about the future. Persons with this personality trait often asks questions, such as “what will tomorrow look like?” What can I do to make the future better?” This personality trait may be seen as desirable and undesirable in many environments. Today, Tom, someone I deeply respect shared a quote with me:
“If one has a foot in the past and another foot in the future, there is no choice but to pee on the present.” At first I find this a funny statement. It provides us something important to consider.
There are many environments that make me feel “grounded,” that is, in work, friendships, and playful activities. Of course I feel very present when I am in the garden.
Gardening in dirt, mud, weeds,
sprout seed,
grow, compost,
green, rough, smooth,
buzzing, bird calls,
be life.
Have you ever noticed that gardening touches all of the senses? Touching, tasting, hearing, and smelling. Perhaps the best moments include multiple angles? What a romantic thought!
This is a relevant first blog post because it demonstrates an example of a reason why many people develop passions for gardening.
Nature, thank you for helping me to look away from my imaginary crystal ball to experience life from all angles.
